Museum of Discovery and Science Seeks Otter Aquarist

SALARY RANGE: Full-time, hourly

DIRECT ACCOUNTABILITY: Life Science Manager

QUALIFICATIONS: A B.S. degree in marine biology or related field is preferred; equivalent experience may be substituted. Two years experience in a zoo or aquarium is required. The qualified individual must have experience with both fresh and saltwater systems. Knowledge of pumps, plumbing and minor electrical experience is required. Must have the ability to diagnose and treat fish disease and illnesses. This position also includes some work with non-aquatic terrestrial species. Must be able to work in a variety of climates including cold water. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs and work in high places. This position also includes some weekend and holiday work. The qualified individual must be able to function as a team member as well as under limited supervision. Must have a valid driver’s license.

SUMMARY: To work as a member of the Life Science Department under the direction of the Life Science Manager; to assume 24 hour responsibility for designated areas, and care for all animals within those areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position is responsible for the overall otter care, including the health and well being of the animals and the upkeep to AZA standards, of their environment.

  • Assume 24-hour responsibility for assigned areas.

  • Responsibilities include maintenance for all freshwater systems and saltwater systems.

  • Maintains accurate records for designated systems and specimens within those systems.

  • Responsible for conducting water chemistry daily and keeping records for all aquariums.

  • Responsible for acquiring, preparation and delivery of animal diets.

  • Conducts training sessions with otters on a daily basis.

  • Administers medical needs to designated specimens as assigned by Life Science Manager.

  • Responsible for diving the otter pool to clean the exhibit and viewing window daily.

  • Responsible for maintaining the otter exhibit terrestrial habitat and plants.

  • Conduct daily maintenance of work space and office areas.

  • Responsible for maintenance and cleaning of otter night house area.

  • Assists as required in related duties at the request of the Manager, the Vice President of Programs, Life Sciences & Exhibits and the President/CEO.
